Student Health Insurance Waivers

You may request a waiver of the university health insurance premium if your current plan meets one of the two following conditions:

  1. You are currently covered and will continue to be covered for the duration of the stay in the U.S. under a group employer health insurance plan (for example, as a daughter/son of a parent covered under employment-based health insurance coverage)
  2. You are currently covered and will continue to be covered for the duration of the stay in the U.S by a health insurance policy that is backed by your home country’s government.

Furthermore, your current plan must meet the following health insurance requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of State:

  1. Medical benefits of at least U.S. $50,000 for each illness or injury
  2. Annual deductible of no more than U.S. $500
  3. Covered benefits paid at a minimum of 75%
  4. *Repatriation of remains at least U.S. $7,500
  5. *Medical evacuation of at least U.S. $10,000
  6. Policies may not exclude or unreasonably limit coverage for activities essential for students (for example, policies with low benefits for inpatient hospitalization and/or automobile accidents are not acceptable).

* A nominal charge will be added for these benefits if they are not included in otherwise acceptable policy.

If you are eligible to submit a request to waive the university insurance plan and fees, you must:

  • Complete the Waiver Request Application Form and return the completed form with all the supporting documentation.  Waiver must be completed during the open enrollment period of each semester. Waivers will not be accepted after the deadline.
  • Submit proof of coverage (your health insurance policy, with an English translation, if applicable, including U.S. dollar amounts and dates of coverage) and all supporting documentation to the OU Student Health Plan Office
  • Policy coverage dates must include the entire semester in which you are enrolling.
  • A university-approved committee will review your request and supporting documents. Waivers that meet minimum criteria will be approved, and the fee for the OU Student Health Plan will be credited to the student bursar account.
  • The waiver process must be completed for each semester in which you wish to waive the OU Student Health Insurance Plan.

Important Information Regarding Exchange Visitors (including students) and their dependents (J-1 and J-2 visa holders)

Under U.S. federal immigration regulations, all Exchange Visitors, both J-1 principals and J-2 dependents, are required to have sufficient sickness and accident insurance and medical evacuation and repatriation insurance for the duration of their exchange visitor status.  The Student Health Insurance plan at the University of Oklahoma meets the minimum guidelines for health insurance for Exchange Visitors as set forth by the U.S. State Department.  A willful failure by an exchange visitor or dependent to carry insurance is considered a serious violation of the Exchange Visitor program regulations, and can lead to a termination of immigration status.

Students with J-1 health insurance questions may access the website of Macori Administration, the OU student health plan administrator. Questions may also be directed to a Macori Adminstration representative by calling toll-free 1-800-285-8133.
