Working at Age 65
Turning 65 is an important milestone, and there are many insurance options available to people nearing their 65th birthday. You may be receiving mail every day about Medicare health coverage, Medicare supplemental plan options, and other important information.
The university knows you have questions and wants to provide you with resources to help you better understand the options available. Here are a few things you will need to consider:
University Group Health Insurance
If you are a benefits-eligible employee with an FTE of .50 or more, your university group health insurance will continue uninterrupted. You can choose to enroll in parts A and/or B of Medicare. Once you have reviewed your
Medicare options
, it is up to you to decide the parts of Medicare in which to enroll.
Medicare 7-Month Initial Enrollment Period
There are limited, designated times in which people can enroll in Medicare. Depending on the situation,
some people may be enrolled in Medicare automatically, and others need to apply for Medicare.
The first time you are eligible to enroll in Medicare is called your
Initial Enrollment Period
.
Your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period:
Begins 3 months before the month you turn 65
Includes the month you turn 65
Ends 3 months after the month you turn 65
Social Security
Employees still actively working maybe eligible to receive some Social Security benefits. Learn about what Social Security benefits you may be entitled to by visiting a local Social Security Administration office or by going online to
www.ssa.gov
. For information about Social Security, retirement, and Medicare, visit this link on the
Social Security site
.
Next Steps
After contacting Medicare, please send a copy of your Medicare card or Medicare Award Letter to the Benefits Office on your campus. The card or letter will have your effective dates of Medicare coverage, and the Health Insurance Claim Number that the medical plan uses to coordinate benefit payments.
